By now, most of you will have heard of Costco, but haven't been told the darker side of all these discounts. If you have been to Costco then maybe you'll sympathise with the following.
Today, the day after shopping, my arms are a little sore. My legs are VERY sore. My back, I'm trying not to think about it at the moment. The large trolleys are helpful for storing stuff by my tiny body is dwarfed. For me, and for many others, going to Costco is like going to a gym, pushing around large unruly trolleys, which get increasingly heavy because you are lifting heavy bulk packs of everything off the shelf and into the trolley.
Additionally, the thought of spending less is probably an illusion. You spend more. You just get more for it. As my wonderful friend Katherine (who did most of the pushing and lifting for me) suggests, people who have more in the cupboard feel like they can use more, because there is so much. I'm hoping that Phil and I will have a bit more restraint.
Don't let all this complaining fool you, I loved Costco, but I thought most people have raved about it for long enough, and I thought that the uninitiated should hear both sides.

Thoughts like love
Mission: "3 a strongly felt aim, ambition, or calling" (oxforddictionaries.com)
Phil:
It all started with thoughts. I have looked to people in full-time Christian ministry. But it was not for me. I am terrified of public speaking, am I not? I can't handle this sort of a task, can I? To be not entrusted with a man's body, but his faith; his theology? That is truly terrifying.
Sure, God called us to tell people about God, to disciple people... But full-time ministry is just not for me. Is it? Is it?
These thoughts and others had been running through my head for many a year. I don't know when it started, perhaps even before I started university study in 2005...
So in my own way I have been seeking something to fulfill that which I have a mission for - improving the world. I sought it in psychology - I could have counselled people... but psychology also terrified me in the end. Could I really cope with people's problems? Then, no, probably not. Now, probably. Nevertheless I moved on and set my sights on statistics. Statistics can help people. They help governments by keeping them informed of how their country could be made better. "Aha!" went my mind. A safe zone. A place to hide. Here I could hide safely in the dark, buried in numbers, not having to deal often with people, but help people nonetheless.
Ah, statistics, how I enjoy statistics....
It was in this job that I found a friend, and also became somewhat disillusioned with government. My friend and I discussed issues often. Philosophical topics were not uncommon, but more often we talked about governance and its failings and flailings. So it was that I began to doubt how much my work would help people....
In the end I came to the conclusion that the best way to help people, to help the world would be to tell them about God. There are so many attempts at patching things up, these are good, but they do not reach to the heart of the problem unless they also tell of God. God transforms those who are his. He changes them to be more like him. We are not perfect, but we earnestly seek him who is perfect. He fills us with love. If the world were filled with his love it would be a better place.
So it was that I returned to where I had begun. Our Lord had told me in his word, simple, straightforward: "No one comes to the Father, except through me". That is, no one is redeeemed from the judgement upon them unless they call on the name of Jesus.... My faith had shamed my mind. My mind shrank from proclaiming the good news.
Now my faith and mind are in one accord and I know I must proclaim the good news. It is my prayer that I always do this.
Thus I come at last to the future I see for us from my mission, my strongly felt calling. To bible college we plan to go and whither then I cannot say (however right now we think, perhaps, to Ireland).
Now I shall leave you with a poem (at the bottom) and a note from my beloved, my Jessica whom I would not be able to do this without and thank and praise God for every day.
Jess:
I have had a leaning towards mission for a few years now. Phil seemed like the sort of man who would become a missionary and I was almost expecting it, I think. However, when he first started telling me about his thoughts, I was initially a little negative. I didn't think that we could be full-time missionaries. I think I believed that full-time missionaries were literally full-time missionaries. They were always out doing things for people, praying, teaching, helping, encouraging, etc. I was really scared that we wouldn't have time with each other, or for our children, if we are so blessed.
These were all silly thoughts. How could so many missionaries do all that and still have good marriages and family relationships?
We went to a discussion night, called Fireside Chat, where we were able to talk to several missionaries and ministry workers about what mission life was like, what we can do now, what steps we can take, and many other pressing questions. At that night, I talked to a CMS representative who encouraged me with her testimony of how she is still an introvert though her job requires her to meet and talk with many people on a regular basis.
This gave me a new perspective and I believe that, though it will most likely be difficult at times, we can make it work.
Today we talked with a pastor at our church, who encouraged us to keep exploring and praying. He also gave us some things to think about and a suggestion to become involved in an international student ministry group. This will hopefully give an idea of what being missionaries might be like for us.
I am very thankful for such an amazing God who did so much for us. A sovereign king who died, but was too great for death. I love that He loves us so much and I really hope that we can show this to others, and foremost to my Godly husband who shows me great love every day.
Running...
I have been running,
Running...
Much of my life running.
Irrational fear,
Hidden quietly away,
Fear of you, Lord.
What you might say.
What you might ask,
of me, of us...
I feared you would take my life,
our life.
Trample our wistful dreams.
Yet you gave me my mind,
Wonderfully crafted according to your will.
I cannot run,
You have used my mind against me,
After all has been considered,
I must go where you want me.
My will becomes yours,
My will bows to yours,
I am your slave.
And I am excited,
Because you have won,
As I have desired.
And I am terrified,
Because you have won,
As I have desired.
It is good that I have desired,
Good for the world,
Wounds healed,
Hearts restored,
And true love to abound.
Always in my work this I have desired:
To help people,
This I must do in some way,
Else I could not be content.
Now I hear you call,
And I listen,
How best to help,
but proclaim you?
How best to help,
but disciple your people?
How best to help,
but follow you?
My goals were always yours,
Only I did not see
(where were my eyes?)
And I did not hear
(did I forget my ears?)
Here am I! Send me.

Oh wow, I'm my mum!
Every other time I have gone on a car trip, it has been with my parents doing all the necessary preparations for the house and the car. Now I am racking my brains, trying to think of what I might need to do - trying to remember what they did do - to get ready for a trip.
So much I need to pack...
So much I need to make sure I get done...
Mustn't leave anything in the fridge that can go off while I'm gone.
And a subsequent praise point that comes out of this car trip, we're off to see more Fosters! I get to be an aunty to two lovely children. I've been their aunty for months now, but I am now actually able to be an aunt to them! Last time I spent time with them I felt a little uncomfortable because I couldn't really say I was their aunt. More like 'the girl your uncle wants to marry'. And trying to explain that to a 1 year old boy and an unborn child was a bit much.
But now, I am their aunt! No more weird explanations or feeling awkward around kids when I love kids!
I feel more comfortable around Phil's brother and sister-in-law too. Not that they ever made me uncomfortable, I just didn't know how I fit in when I was just a girlfriend. Though we became engaged that weekend, I still didn't feel very sure of myself around all these people who I felt I had to impress with my maturity. As a 19 year old who got engaged after 3.5 months, I felt like I had to show that I was mature. But it came out rather awkward. I guess I felt very young. Even now I still feel (and I am!) young. I'm only 20. But what's to stop me relating with people older than me? What's to make me feel like I can't?
Exactly!
Which is kind of leading me to another subject (sorry about this scatty post) which I have posted a bit about, and thought a lot about. Beauty.
What is stopping me feeling beautiful and what is making me feel like I am not?
I watched a documentary on body image. A fairly balanced and broad take on how people feel about their body. Anorexia of course was in there, but there was more: how children viewed themselves and each other, what they wanted to be; how adults wanted to have surgery on their feet (so they can fit the expensive, sexy shoes they buy), and on their vaginas (because they wanted to look like pornographic women).
A lot of the documentary scared me. Sometimes in a bad way (like the vagina part - no pictures, but scary thought), but also in a self-reflective way. I'd find myself thinking, 'How can they think that?' but then I suddenly remembered my own thoughts when looking at myself very recently.
I hadn't really thought about myself. For quite a while I've been jumping up and down on the 'Stop sexualisation of women and children' bandwagon, reading articles, watching documentaries and such, and trying to get people to think about how they are beautiful. I didn't consciously think about myself. That's not really good or bad, I just didn't. I stopped thinking about it a while ago when I noticed I was thinking more positively than I used to.
Yet, when I watched other people thinking negatively about their body, I saw myself and realised that I still worry so much. Not as much, but I don't want to worry. I want to stop worrying.
Ah, to stop worrying. Something I can and should start now...

I don't know what to do
I'm afflicted with indecision. Big things, small things, other things.
... I don't know whether I should have lunch or keep reading articles on the internet which only make me angry but that I can't do much about.
... I don't actually feel hungry, due to getting up late and eating breakfast late.
... I don't know whether to do that craft project or do the vacuuming. I don't really feel like doing anything much. WHY!?!
I know why. It's because of my nose.
It's ridiculous. I hate my nose. I don't particularly care for the shape of the nose but that's not what bothers me. The inside of the nose itches. It makes me sneeze. Anything can set it off. If I get a cold shiver, if my arm or hand gets a bit too cold, or my neck, or if there's a little bit of dust, or some unseen spore that fills our house:
I sneeze.
Not just one sneeze, but many. This leads to lots of things. Sometimes it is just one sneeze, but mostly it's several, which means my nose starts getting clogged. I can blow it as often as I like, it makes little difference.
This lasts for anything from a few hours to a few days.
It's exhausting. So many reasons why.
1) Sneezing uses lots of muscles. Lots of sneezing is tiring.
2) A blocked nose often results in:
- a headache
- or a general feeling of tightness in my face
- or blocked/achy ears.
3) Sneezing and a blocked nose results in a night of disturbed sleep. I woke up at 2 the other morning because I needed to sneeze. I didn't want to wake Phil so I managed to make no noise, but I did shake the bed fairly violently. I ended up getting up and blowing my nose for a while in the loungeroom so I wouldn't disturb my love. It worked, he slept. But I didn't.
The two types of allergy medications I have tried haven't worked very well. The first time I think it worked - possibly placebo effect. But I'm not sure that it worked, I might have just come to the end of that sneezing fit and the drug coincided.
I don't know what to do.
Moving house isn't an option for a while and it is something I really don't want to do for a lot of reasons.
Any suggestions?

Conversions, God and Video Games
Howdy again,
I've finished uni for the semester!
And now the house is so much cleaner!
Except I haven't vacuumed.
But I will.
But I have to shop first.
I'm getting ahead of myself though, I have been converted. It all started with creepy aliens who no one could remember. Then she's pregnant/not pregnant/pregnant/not pregnant/make up your bloomin' mind.
And now I'm hooked :S Every Saturday now, at 7:30, Phil and I sit in the same position on the couch (otherwise the tv goes fuzzy) and we watch Doctor Who. I am sure that Pirates of the Caribbean peoples will soon be sueing them for breaching copy right in the latest episode. But hey! At least I didn't see any Daleks or Cybermen.
I feel a bit bad for converting after years of dissing Doctor Who. But I still diss them and Phil is happier when I am excited to be seeing Doctor Who ;)
Now, God and video games! I am nearly finished Dragon Age. It is a very long, well written, excellent plot line computer game that I have been playing on and off since Phil and I got married. He was so excited about it, and now I'm so excited about it, and one of my friends is also so excited about it and I have been having a ball going through it and doing awesome things. And strangely enough, I have discovered something about me. I can't disconnect myself from my character.
I think I know why.
I don't think it's because I am so 'everything has to be about me'. At least, I don't think that's the whole reason. I don know for sure, but I think it's because I can't disconnect from God. God is so good and I want to do what he would do, so as much as possible I have made my character do what I think God would want her to do.
Then I got up to a REALLY annoying thing in the game. It's towards the end and here are massive spoilers so DO NOT READ IF YOU DON'T WANT SPOILERS!!
SPOILERS!
This part of the game I have a choice. I can either: convince my boyfriend/partner/lover to sleep with a witch, just once, and we can both live; or I can say no, and then I must choose which of us must die.
I have had bad moral dilemmas in this game before, but all through the game I tried my hardest to choose the path that would let him and her live. I made Anora the queen, and not him.
But even in a game, I couldn't handle him sleeping with this witch. I just thought how sad it would make God.
And so I have to choose who should die. Should he die? Should my character die? If he dies, then it would be the first decision he's ever made in his life, I daresay. He's not very good at making up his mind. At least he would die having been strong for once. But what about my character? Should she let him die for her, or should she die for him? Men are strong, designed to protect women, asked to protect women (sorry, not meaning to preach, just stating what I believe) and so I would say that maybe he should die for her.
I read too much into video games I think....

Wow
Wow.
Wow! I still have a lollipop left over from that bag I got weeks ago!
Whoa, what is the rental agreement doing there?
Hey, that's the letter I was going to mail to my sisters.
I don't remember that letter... I think I was going to write 'Return to Sender' on it months ago.
Hmmm, that piece of paperwork reminds me... should I be doing something about my HECS debt? Or is it called HELP debt these days?
Yuck, that pamphlet on pap smears. Is it illegal to not do them? Or just extremely, highly, very much recommended, do-it-or-you-might-die kind of thing?
A cool quote: "His non-sense is not vacuity of sense: it is a parody of sense and that is the sense of it." T.S. Eliot, talking about non-sense.
Hmm, I wrote that underneath a weird poem of mine. About knitting and writting (yes, writting, prnounce it like knitting) and ends with me saying I want to go home. I wrote it in a tutorial. I think I'll keep it and never look at it again.
Hah, a marriage certificate. I should file that.
Hehehehe, the tealight that has hot chocolate in it.
Ivy and bullet casing pens. Those pens don't work... Why are we keeping them?
I should clean my desk more often.

Hah, a marriage certificate. I should file that.
Hehehehe, the tealight that has hot chocolate in it.
Ivy and bullet casing pens. Those pens don't work... Why are we keeping them?
I should clean my desk more often.

Bribing myself silly!
Well, it worked! I told myself that if I finish a specific part of my assignment before lunch I could go to Beadstreet - the nearby beading shop. It wasn't a hard part of my assignment. None of that assignment is hard. But I have been having trouble with procrastinating. If something is easy I keep feeling like I can put it off. I was getting sick of it, putting it off constantly, and feeling bad for continually getting nothing done. But I am enjoying it now :)
I bribed myself with little things along the way. Finish another hundred words, and you can look at facebook. Next hundred words and you can listen to that awesome song you're craving. And so on and so fifth.
Now to eat lunch and then to go drool over beads!
Stay tuned for my upcoming jewellery facebook page! I'm not looking for much in the way of profits, so the cheap price might actually encourage people to buy them ;)
